  • Trump accused South Africa by showing wrong videos
  • The video was actually from Congo, not South Africa
  • White House did not comment on this

Johannesburg: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday showed a screenshot of a Reuters Video, incorrectly as evidence of the mass murders of white people in South Africa, which was actually taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Trump showed a print copy of an article at a meeting of the White House with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, in which there was a picture of the bodies being lifted by human activists in Goma city of Congo. This picture was taken from the video of Reuters, which was followed by the attack with Rwanda -backed M23 rebels.

This picture was in the blog post of a conservative online magazine called American Thinker, in which there was a talk of conflict and racial tension in South Africa and Congo. There was no caption of the picture in the post, but it was described as ‘Screen Grab’, taken from a video news report related to Congo on YouTube, in which the news agency Reuters was given credit. The White House did not comment on this. American Thinker’s managing editor and post writer Andrea Vidberg said Trump ‘wrongly recognized the picture’. However, he said that the post had talked about the increasing pressure on Ramaphosa’s ‘racist Marxist government’ and white South Africans.

Who made video

This photo was taken from a collective burial scene after the M23 attack in Goma by the video journalist Zafar Al Katanti of Reuters. Katanti said that it was very difficult for journalists to reach there that day, and they had to coordinate with M23 and ICRC. He said that seeing the use of his picture from Trump, he was shocked, in which Trump tried to convince Ramaphosa that white people were being killed in South Africa.

Photo shown to the President of South Africa

Ramaphosa came to Washington this week to improve relations with the US, as Trump had criticized South Africa’s land policy, foreign policy and alleged bad behavior with white minorities in recent months. However, South Africa has rejected it. Trump played a video at a meeting with Ramaphosa, which he described as evidence of the massacre of white farmers in South Africa. Trump again showed print copies of some articles, in which he said that the white south Africans are described.
