Maharashtran monsoon update: The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) said on Sunday (May 25) that the south-west monsoon has already entered Maharashtra before the scheduled time. The Meteorological Department said that the south-west monsoon has reached Maharashtra. It is expected to reach Mumbai and some other parts in the next three days. In Maharashtra, coastal Konkan and Mumbai have been receiving heavy rains before the monsoon for the last two days.
The IMD said that the monsoon proceeded on Sunday in some other parts of the Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Sampoorna Goa, parts of Maharashtra, Bay of North Bengal, and Mizoram, Manipur and parts of Nagaland. According to the Meteorological Department, the northern border of the monsoon passes through Deogarh, Belagavi, Haaveri, Mandya, Dharmapuri, Chennai, Aizawl, Kohima.
The Meteorological Agency said, “Circumstances are favorable for moving forward in some other parts of the Monsoon in some other parts of the Arabian Sea, including Mumbai. In addition, during the next three days of the monsoon, Karnataka, including Bengaluru, parts of Andhra Pradesh, parts of Andhra Pradesh, the rest of Tamil Nadu, the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, west-medieval and northern Bengal are expected to reach out to some other parts of the Bays of Bay and North Bengal.”
The southwest monsoon knocked in Kerala on Saturday. This is the first time since 2009 that the monsoon has reached Kerala so soon. In 2009, the monsoon reached Kerala on 23 May. Normally the southwest monsoon knocks in Kerala by 1 June. Whereas by July 8, it reaches the whole country.
The monsoon starts retreating from northwest India around 17 September and returns completely by 15 October. It usually reaches Maharashtra around June 7 and Mumbai on 11 June.
Heavy rain alert in Mumbai
Maharashtra’s coastal Konkan and Mumbai have been receiving heavy pre-monsoon rains for the last two days. The pre monsoon knocked on Saturday night in the financial capital of the country. Many areas of Mumbai were filled with rains. Meteorologists have predicted before the monsoon time in Maharashtra this year. Due to this, it is raining thunderstorms in Mumbai.
Dr. Shubhangi Bhuthe, head of Mumbai-based Regional Meteorological Center, told the news agency PTI, “The normal date of its arrival in the South-West monsoon has reached about a week before 1 June. The weather conditions remain favorable to move forward.”
He said that the monsoon knock is due to the current favorable weather conditions before the scheduled time. The Meteorological Department has projected heavy rains there, issuing ‘Red Alert’ for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Ghat areas of Satara and Kolhapur may also receive extremely heavy rainfall at some places.
“Orange Alert ‘has been issued for Raigad district, however, there is no warning of heavy rains for the city of Mumbai. The Meteorological Department is monitoring the status and will provide necessary information from time to time,” said Bhutte.
The southwest monsoon usually knocks in Kerala on 1 June. After this, it covers the entire country by 8 July. It begins to retreat from northwest India around 17 September. It goes back completely by 15 October.
