The Odisha Vigilance Department has recovered about Rs 2.1 crore cash during simultaneous raids at seven places, all these locations are associated with a government employee Baikunth Nath Sarangi, who is the Chief Engineer in the Rural Development Department of the state. This search was done after the allegations that Sarangi had more wealth than his income. However, a highly dramatic incident occurred during this raid, when Vigilance officials arrived to raid, Sarangi tried to throw out cash bundles from her flat window.
A team of vigilance officers, including 8 DSP, 12 Inspector and 6 Sub-Inspector, conducted raids on the basis of a search warrant issued by the Special Judge of Angul’s Vigilance. The assets found in the search include a two -storey house in Kardagadia (Angul), a flat in Dumduma (Bhubaneswar) and a flat in Siula (Pipili, Puri).
A total cash worth Rs 2.1 crore was seized from two locations associated with Sarangi: Rs 1 crore from his flat in Bhubaneswar and Rs 1.1 crore from his house in Angul.
Counting machines were used to find out the correct amount in the seizure.
Vigilance officials said that the raids are going on and the property of Sarangi is being fully evaluated.
CBI arrested ED officer
In another case related to financial crime, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Odisha for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a businessman from Bhubaneswar.
The arrested ED officer Chintan Raghuvanshi had allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore from businessman Ratikant Raut, who traded stone mining business in Dhenkanal, for ‘relief’ in a case against him.
Raghuvanshi, an IRS officer of the 2013 batch of Customs and in these direct tax department, was allegedly caught by the Central Agency by laying a trap. Officials said that he was later arrested after questioning.
