UNSC extended arms ban on South Sudan to 31 May 2026. The proposal ‘2781’ received the support of 9 countries, while 6 countries did not participate in voting. Relaxation of restrictions can be given in future.

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution against South Sudan.
United Nations: When violence and instability in the world lasts for a long time, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is fixed. The latest case is of South Sudan, where the flood of weapons worsened the situation. Now UNSC has taken a big step to stop this. In New York on Friday, UNSC passed an important resolution, under which the arms ban imposed on South Sudan has been extended by the next one year i.e. 31 May 2026. Not only this, strict actions like travel ban and property confiscation will also continue against the people and institutions who are alleged to have spread violence or instability.
How was voting on the proposal?
The proposal was named ‘2781’ and was supported by 9 countries. But 6 countries refused to participate in voting. Surprisingly, the African country itself – like Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Somalia – stayed away from voting. Along with him, China, Pakistan and Russia also remained inactive spectators. This suggests that international consent on this issue is still broken.
Panel work also increased
Along with this proposal, the tenure of the team of experts who monitored the South Sudan has also been extended till 1 July 2026. This team cooperates in monitoring and reporting the ‘Sudan Ban Committee’. The Security Council has made it clear that if Sudan shows progress on the criteria fixed in 2021, restrictions can be relaxed.
Left scope for change
The UNSC has indicated that this ban is not a stone streak. If the situation improves, then they can also be changed – meaning removing, relaxing or tightening further. The United Nations Secretary -General has also been asked to review the situation by 15 April 2026 and report how much South Sudan has progressed. Also, the government of South Sudan itself has been instructed to tell what concrete steps they have taken in the direction of peace and stability.
