Washington: The Supreme Court of America has given a big legal relief to President Donald Trump. The court stayed the decision of Boston’s District Judge Indira Talwani, in which he stopped the Trump administration from ending the temporary legal status (parole program) of about 5,32,000 migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua. This parole program was launched by former President Joe Biden in 2022, under which migrants from these countries were allowed to stay in the US for two years. This decision of the Supreme Court has further strengthened Trump’s policy of exile. Let’s know who is the judge Indira Talwani and what is their connection to India?
Who is Judge Indira Talwani?
The name of Indian-American Judge Indira Talwani is in the headlines in this entire case. On April 14, Judge Indira stopped the order of the Trump administration, which was said to end the legal status of these migrants immediately. He had said in his order that the Trump administration misinterpreted the immigration law. According to him, this parole program was for those who were legally in the US and were allowed after background checks, sponsor support and travel expenses. Indira argued that such people should not face quick exile like illegal migrants.
Indira Talwani was born to Indian and German migrant parents. His father, Manik Talwani, was a world-famous geologist who contributed significantly in the field of science. His family belongs to Talwan village near Jalandhar in Punjab, which shows his Indian roots. Indira completed his graduation from Harvard University and later earned a Zuris doctor degree from Balt Hall School of Law in Berkeley, Berkeley. He was selected at the Order of the Coif at Law School and worked as an Article Editor in the Industrial Relations Law Journal.
Legal career and deep connection with India
Indira started her career as a law clerk for Judge Stanley Veigal in California. Subsequently, she joined a law firm in San Francisco, where she advocated in workers and employment cases. In 1999, she became a partner in Boston’s Segal Rawitman LLP, where she played an important role in workers’ rights, collective cases and union talks. She has also been the Senior Editor of a book on the Family and Medical Leave Act of the American Bar Association. Talwan village is not only part of their family heritage, but also shows how people of Indian origin are leaving their mark in areas like law, science and social justice in America.
