ANNA University Sexual Assault Case: A women’s court in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, sentenced Gyanasekharan convicted in December last year for sexual harassment of a student at Anna University, on Monday (June 2) to life imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years without any exemption. Women’s Court Judge M. Rajalakshmi said that the convict will have to stay in jail at least 30 years without any exemption. Along with this, the convict has also been fined Rs 90,000.

Women’s court judge M. Rajalakshmi convicted Gyanasekharan on May 28 in the case. The judge sentenced the prosecution in connection with every 11 allegations proved against him. The judge said that the punishment will run together. While delivering the verdict on Monday, the court also asked Gyanasekharan to pay a fine of Rs 90,000.

Convicting Gyanasekharan, the court admitted that the prosecution proved this sexual harassment case that shook Tamil Nadu in December 2024. The court said that there is no scope for doubt. The government lawyer then told the journalists that the prosecution filed 11 allegations against Gyanasekharan and proved all the allegations using documentary and forensic evidence.

The judge blamed Gyanasekharan and said that he had claimed that he was the only person to earn in the family. Based on this, he requested the court to soften the sentence. A sensational case arose due to this sensational case in Tamil Nadu over the alleged relationship of the accused person with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). However, party president and Chief Minister MK Stalin said in January that Gyansekharan was not a member of DMK. He only tilted with the party and was a supporter of it.

What is the whole matter?

The matter came to light when the victim lodged a complaint at the All Women’s Police Station in Kotturapuram on 23 December last year. The victim alleged in her complaint that when she was with her male friend. Gyanasekharan then threatened him and then sexually assaulted him. Gyanasekharan was later arrested.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on 23 December 2024. The victim was an engineering student. She was on campus with her male friend. Gyanasekharan showed a fake video of his intimate relationships and threatened him and warned that he would share it with university officials, which would be expelled.

He then forced the boy to forcibly leave. Then took the girl with her to a deserted part of the campus. While pretending to investigate the boy’s university staff, he scared the victim even more. When he refused to accept his demands, Gyanasekharan allegedly sexually assaulted him.

He recorded this act on his mobile phone. Later he took his phone number and blackmailed him, threatening that he would send the video to his father and college officials if he did not meet him again. However, the girl showed courage by refusing to remain silent.

The FIR of the case was downloaded from the Tamil Nadu Police’s Crime and Criminal Monitoring Network and System (CCTNS) website. Then aired by some sections of the media, causing an uproar. The Madras High Court later handed over the investigation of the case to a special investigation team, which also investigated the FIR leaking.

SIT filed a charge sheet in the magistrate court in February. The case was then handed over to the women court. The women court framed charges against Gyanasekharan under various sections of the Code of Justice of India (BNS). These include sexual harassment, Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS), IT (Information Technology) Act and Tamil Nadu Women’s Harassment Prevention Act.
