Glenn Maxwell Odie Retirement: Australian all -rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from ODIs on Monday (June 2) with immediate effect. With this, he said goodbye to his 13 -year -old career for the national team in a 50 -over format. However, he will be available in T20 International cricket. Maxwell announced his retirement on the final word podcast. Maxwell said that he had made up his mind to retire from ODI format during Australia’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. Maxwell first played international cricket for Australia in the 2012 ODI in 2012. He was part of the ODI World Cup winning teams in 2015 and 2023.
The Australian all -rounder revealed that he had talked about his decision with George Bailey, chairman and former partner of Australia during the Champions Trophy. Maxwell said, “I thought I was a little disappointing the team, because the body was reacting to the circumstances. I had a good conversation with George Belly (President of Cricket Australia’s selectors) and I asked him what his views were about.”
Maxwell faced a difficult time in the ongoing IPL 2025 season with Punjab Kings before being out due to injury. He said that he believes that he disappointed the team in the role of his middle order during a 50 -over tournament in Pakistan and UAE. The two -time ODI World Cup winner told the final Word Podcast, “I said to him (from Bailey),” I don’t think I will be able to do it. “
The Australian cricketer said, “I think the time has come to plan for the people coming to my place. They should work on it and try to make that place their own for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they will get enough edge, where they can succeed in that role.” He added, “My decision to retire from ODI international cricket probably came after a few matches of the Champions Trophy.”
Explosive batsmen and often low -spin bowlers have played 149 ODIs for Australia. Maxwell came against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, when his team staggering on the score of 91/7.
