The central government can bring impeachment motion in Parliament against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Verma. Yashwant Verma was convicted by the investigation panel of the Supreme Court after receiving a huge amount of burnt cash from his government residence in Delhi. Government sources told CNN-NEWS18 that they would talk to all opposition parties before taking any action against Justice Verma. Verma faced criticism from different political parties.
Government sources have indicated that impeachment proceedings can be considered during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, in which Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will submit the proposal. After the dispute, Verma was recently transferred back from Delhi High Court to Allahabad High Court.
According to sources, India’s Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna wrote a letter to both the President and the Prime Minister recommending the impeachment against Justice Verma after an internal investigation of the panel appointed by the Supreme Court.
The investigation allegedly convicted the judge, but the panel results were not made public. Sources said that CJI Khanna had also requested Justice Verma to resign, but he refused to do so.
However, an official made it clear that no formal proceedings have been started against the judge yet. Justice Verma has described himself as innocent and denied any relationship with the cash found after the fire in his outhouse.
