According to reports on Tuesday, the United States Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth renamed the US Navy ship to the name of homosexual rights activist Harvey Milk.

The USNS Harvey Milk was named after the politician of San Francisco and named in 2021 as part of the John Lewis class of tankers.

Associated Press and Reuters cited anonymous source, saying that the order came from the office of Hestst.

Defense News website Military.com said that it had reviewed a memorandum from the office of the Navy Secretary stating that the step was in line with the alleged target of Hegseth of “to re -establish a warrior culture” in the US armed forces.

CBS News stated that the Navy is considering the title of several other ships, including the names of the former US Supreme Court Justice; Thugud Marshall, the first black member of the apex court and the Liberal icon Ruth Baddar Ginsburg.

There was no immediate response to the Pentagon or the US Navy for various inquiries about the report.

Who was Harvey Milk?

Harvey Milk served as a US Navy diver at a time when homosexuality was banned in the army and was first one of the openly gay politicians in the US.

Milk was selected for the board of San Francisco supervisors, where he played an important role in passing the laws that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Months later, in 1978, milk was shot dead by Mayor George Moskon by an dissatisfied former city supervisor.

Milk’s murder helped cement his reputation as a civil rights icon, and was posthumously awarded the President of freedom.
