Colombian Presidential Executive Shot in Bogota – DW – 06/08/2025

A presidential claimant in Colombia is in critical condition after being shot at an expedition rally at Bogota, Bogota on Saturday.

According to initial reports by the AFP news agency, Miguel Uribe Turbey, a senator, who shoots either in the head or back.

Local media reports say the suspect is considered a teenager who was also arrested at the scene.

“Miguel is fighting for his life,” his wife, Maria Claudia Tarzona wrote on the senator’s X account, urged Colombins to pray for him.

Uribe Julio is the grandson of Cesar Turbay Ayala, who was the President of Columbia from 1978 to 1982.

He is not belonging to former President Allvaro Uribe, a famous conservative politician who served as the President of the country from 2002 to 2010.

What do we know about the attack?

Uribe, who is running to join the presidential race next year, was attacked in a park in Fontibon district, according to his right -wing Democratic Center Party.

Local media videos and photos roam around the scene showing running away from the scene, and 39 -year -old Urribe, included in blood, being held by people.

Uribe was taken to the Santa Foundation Hospital, where he was undergoing “neurosurgeical and peripheral vascular process”.

Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez vowed to deploy “all his abilities” to see if more than one person was involved in the attack.

He wrote that he was offering 3 billion Colombian pesos ($ 730,000) on X, which was for any information to catch criminals.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in a post in his X account, “Respect life, this is a red line.” He later canceled his visit to France citing “severity of events”.

US State Secretary Marco Rubio called shooting “a direct threat to democracy”, writing on X, “The United States attempts to kill Senator Miguel Uribe in the strongest possible words.”

Rubio asked leftist President Petro to “dialy inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials.”
