Italian votes on citizenship rules, Labor Act – DW – 06/08/2025

Elections for a referendum were opened at a two -day polling task in Italy on Sunday, which could complete the citizenship law and laboratory laws.

The vote was triggered by an NGO -led ground level campaign. According to the Italian Constitution, a public opinion can be called a referendum when a petition is signed by at least 500,000 voters.

Results are expected after the election closure at local time (2PM UTC) at 3 pm on Monday. Over 51 million Italians are particularly eligible in votes, but the results are binding only with 50% gymnastics.

Italy has held 78 referendum, but many of them were not due to not reaching more than 50% of the results.

Italian voting on making citizenship rules easier

There are many questions related to the country’s labor law on the ballot, while a hot issue in Italy, the immigration policy, is the one who has attracted the most attention.

Italian will be asked if they support the reduction of time requests to apply for citizenship that makes it easier to get citizenship for children born in Italy.

Currently, a non-european association without margin or blood relations for Italy will have to last 10 years in adult country, before they can apply for citizenship. The referendum asks it to reduce it by 5 years.

For changes in citizenship law, preachers say that it will help integrate the birth of the second generation Italian in a culture for non-EUU parents in the country that they already see as them.

They say that this reform will bring Italy’s Citizenship Act to several other European countries including Germany, stating that about 2.5 million people would benefit.

Italian voters want to choose whether they agree with more and more workers against dismissal, access to high dissection payment, support in permanent people for conversion of fixed -term contracts, and liability in cases of workplace accidents.

Meloni’s government urges a mess

Politically, the Center-Leam Democratic Party and other groups that oppose the current government of Italy are supporting the referendum and urging voters to pass measures.

But the governing right -wing alliance in Rome under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is advising to participate against his supporters and the public, required that the vote does not reach the 50% limit.

Meloni has said that she will go to elections, but a ballot would not be cast, a step that was widely criticized by the Left.

Last month’s opinion polls have shown that only 46% of Italian people were aware of the issues of referendum. The turnout is estimated to be around 35%, which will be below the target to be near the reforms.

Meloni does not refund the measure of citizenship. His remote party brothers from Italy have songs to curb illegal immigration, while the legal work for migrants is increasing the number of visas.

He praised the current system, “Excellent law, in the open, in the sense that we have been one of the European countries over the years that provide the most citizenship each year.”
