India’s Modi set to carry forward the trade corridor talks in Cyprus – DW – 06/16/2025

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to negotiate Cyprus’s possible role in connecting India to Europe through a trade corridor on Monday.

On the second day of his visit, Modi is expected to hold formal talks with Cyprhat leaders, where there is a significant tits for the corridor.

The visit has attracted so much attention in India, where it is seen as a message for Turkish-one rival neighbor, which Cyprus-Whitch openly supported Pakistan in India in its recent border hostels.

India is pursuing the so-called India-Midil East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) trade link through sea and railways.

Cyprit Nicos Crystodoulides told reporters, “One of our discussions, which is related to Europe with Europe through the Middle East region, (and) its entry into Europe through the Republic of Cyprus,”

IMEC is widely seen as a counter of China’s belt and road initiative.

Hard support

Modi reached Cyprus on Sunday and took out a full day of activities including meeting Indian migrant people, informal meeting with President Christodaulids, followed by a business goal.

The Indian media, without citing officials, stated that the leaders facilitated an MoU between India’s National Payment Corporation (NPCI) and Eurobank of Cyprus to introduce UPI services in Cyprus border transactions.

The journey is part of a large diplomatic outreach for European countries. Modi has been designed to visit Canada for the G7 summit.
