On Wednesday, members of the political spectrum of the European Parliament chose a possible Hungary ban on an upcoming pride program in Budapest and called the European Union Executive Branch to intervene.
In March, the Hungarian Parliament passed a bill, allowing the provisional LGBTQ+ events on “Child Protection” basis, and empowered to use facial recognition techniques to identify the police.
The week before the far-flung Nationalist Prime Minister Victor Orban, the Budapest Pride organizer warned that “to organize the program of 2025” should not be disturbed.
Gargali Karkani, the Mayor of Budapest, a liberal political rival from Orban, has tried to organize a proud festival on June 28, pushing back which skirts the law by binging a municipal program. “The people of Hungary have the right to remain free in a democracy that respects their dignity to the rule of law and protects the fundamental freedom of all citizens,” Swedish Christian Democrat Member Tomas Tomas Tomus. “Opposition in Hungary is growing and Orban is clearly afraid.”
What could European Union officials do?
The potential pride ban is based on a Hungarian law of 2021 that is a ban on public performance or spread of the so -called “LGBTI content” to publicly protect children’s safety. Bill angry with the European Union and was clearly slammed by other member states as homophobic.
The European Commission opened a violation proceedings against Budapest, which is still going on in the Judicial Court in the European Court. Fabien Keller of the Liberal Renew Group called for full use of Article 7 of the European Union Treaty, which addresses severe and frequent violations of the values of the European Union by the member states.
“Now for seven years, the Orban government has continued to destroy the rule of law,” he said, he will be among those who travel to Budapest proud with greens, socialists and members of the left group.
Hungary has been subject to the process to protect the European Union’s rules since 2018. But the Commission has not yet used the so -called nuclear option and has suspended Hungary’s voting rights on Joint European Union affairs.
Commission ‘ready to use all equipment’
On Wednesday, European Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath pointed to the ongoing violation of the 2021 law, in which a decision was being taken from the ECJ in the coming months. The officials were currently investigating the latest legal changes, he said.
“Our union is established on freedom and equality. Everyone must be used, which are to live independently and they love, which they choose,” McGrath said, who is Irish.
He said, “The European Union and European Commissions are ready to use all its equipment to ensure that the European Union law is correct in our Union,” he said without specifying how it would do it.
This is the first time Hungary has faced search criticism in the European Parliament. Orban, who brands him as an informal nationalist, has been accused of reducing basic democratic standards in Hungary with years of improving the judiciary and press for a long time.
