The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are set to sign a peace agreement on 27 June, in a joint statement with the US State Department on Wednesday.
The technical teams of the countries have already started draft, which is expected to be formally signed in Washington next week.
The draft Peace Deal aims to end the fight in Eastern Congo, where the Rwanda-supported M33 rebels made significant progress at the beginning of the year, occupying the strategic city Goma and Bukevu city.
“The agreement includes commissioning of honor for regional integrity and prohibition of hosts; disintegration, disarmament and conditional integration of non-state armed groups,” said on the website of the State Department.
We push for peace in Eastern Congo
US State Secretary Marco Rubio will witness the official signature ceremony next week.
The agreement announced on Wednesday created on the announcement of the principles signed between the two countries in April.
This would indicate a success to prevent the struggle of President Donald Trump’s administration in eastern Congo and attract billions of dollars in Western investment in the mineral-region region.
But it is not clear that the Congo River Alliance – an alliance of rebel groups that included M3 – would stick to it.
The lesson includes commission on “disintegration, dismantling and conditional integration” of “non-state armed groups”.
The ceasefire is often broken
Rawandan and Congoless experts twice last year as under the mediation of Angola and Rawandan Hutu reached the agreement against rebel group FDLR under joint operation, but ministers of the two countries failed to support deals.
Angola stepped as a mediator in March, as after several unsuccessful attempts to solve the growing Rwanda-supported ribiv in Eastern Congo.
The fight intensified this year as the Rwanda-supported M23 rebels displaced thousands and upgraded to seize the two largest cities of the region.
Congo accused Rwanda of supporting M23 with soldiers and weapons, while Rwanda refuses to help the group and says its army is working in self -defense.
