Population growth on decline – DW – 06/20/2025

The German population increased by 0.1% in 2024, as per the preliminary data released by the Federal Statistical Office on Friday, was observed a year before an increase of 0.4%.

As a result, the population for the largest economy of the European Union is now 83.6 million.

The population growth is concentrated in the western states of Germany, with an increase of 0.2%, while the eastern states recorded a decline of 0.3%, except the city-state of Berlin.

The largest population loss occurred in the eastern states of Thuringa (below 15,000 or 0.7%), Saxoni (12,000 or 0.3%below), and Saxony-Enahalt (9,000 or 0.4%below).

Mainly due to aging of baby boomers generation, the number of people above 60 to 79 increased 2.2%. The 80-and-over population increased slightly by 0.2%.

By the end of 2024, Germany’s 30.5% of the population was 60 or older.

The number of foreign nationals living in Germany increased from 2.3% to 12.4 million in 2024, with the largest diaspora Türkiye National (1,403 million). The next largest migrant in Germany is, according to initial data, Ukrainian is a migrant (1,085 million), followed by Syria (889,000), Romania (771,000) and Poland (723,000).
