As media, the Institute for Trade, Paragraph and Marketing (IHAM) at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz has researched in a representative survey on the second hand consumption in Austria.
In April and May, over 1,000 people in Austria were asked about their consumption habits. According to the study, around 47% have bought used retail goods (except motor vehicle and antiques) in the past twelve months. In humans under 30 (gen z), the proportion is 62%, for baby boomers (over 60 years old) only in one third.
The reasons for second hand purchases also differ between the generations. The idea of sustainability was most frequently mentioned in the baby boomers. With the gene X (45-60 years old) it is mostly the price for high-quality branded products. The Gen Y (30-45 years old) usually mentioned the search for a personal lifestyle as a reason. It is similar with gen z that are looking for special or rare products in the second hand shopping. Bought is most frequently online, followed by second-hand shops and flea markets.
Fashion is bought most frequently, followed by books and furniture and garden products. On average, 300 euros are spent on second-hand products in the year.
