IIT Bombay: A surprising news has come out from IIT Bombay, the most prestigious technology institute from the country. A 22-year-old man from Mangaluru has been arrested as a student for allegedly for almost three weeks for living illegally on the IIT-Bombay campus. The accused has been identified as Bilal Ahmed Teli. He allegedly entered the institute without any valid identity and stayed in the hostel rooms for about 20 days. The most interesting thing is that, he managed to hide his identity for 20 days and no one even got to know about it.
Came to attend the program and kept having fun in campus for 20 days
According to the police, Bilal Ahmed first entered the campus to attend an event on 27 May. However, instead of going out after the program, he continued to attend classes during the day and used hostel facilities at night, while he was not enrolled in the institute. The case was revealed on 17 June when Bilal was found sitting in a classroom during a lecture. His presence suspected other students and later caught him by the premises of the campus. Powai police took him into custody.
According to the information, Bilal Ahmed allegedly created 21 different email IDs and used several phone numbers in an attempt to escape without leaving digital marks. These antics have raised serious questions regarding the safety protocol in IIT-Bombay, one of the most prestigious engineering institutions in India.
Mumbai crime branch will investigate
After initial interrogation, the Powai police registered an FIR against Bilal on 21 June. On Wednesday, he was formally arrested and produced before the magistrate, who sent him to 14 days police custody. The case has now been transferred to the Crime Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Crime Branch for further intensive investigation. Bilal has been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections related to fraud, forgery and criminal betrayal.
The officials have not yet disclosed the motive behind doing so nor have it been told whether Bilal had ever done similar actions before. Institutions and legal agencies are reviewing safety measures to prevent such security violations in future.
