Thousands of LGBTQ+ Tenses of Rights Supporters attended the Budapest Pride March on Saturday, disregarding a police ban and threat to Hungary Prime Minister Victor Orban.
“We believe Arena 180,000 to 200,000 people are participating,” Pride Chairman Victoria Radwani told the AFP news agency. “It is difficult to guess because there are so many people in Budapest Pride.”
Local media sites, including 444.hu and Magyar Hang, estimated the crowd to be close to 100,000, still more than the previous record polling of 35,000 people.
Orban has banned the rights of the LGBTQ+ community over the years, and his party MPs have passed a law in March, which allows a pride march to ban, claiming that it was motivated by the need for children’s safety.
However, Budapest’s Mayor Gargali Karkani declared a municipal program to the Pride Parade, arguing that the designation enhances the assembly law and renders to ban the police.
European support
The annual program is now a symbol of resistance to a general suppression of the Civil Society in Hungary under the Nationalist Government of Orban, which is facing a growing challan from the Tisza Party of Center Opposition leader Peter Magyar before the next year.
