Pornography is being served, police alone cannot curb rape incidents: Madhya Pradesh’s DGP – Madhya Pradesh DGP Kailash Makwana Pornography is Being Served Police Alone Cannot Curb Rape Incidents

Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana has said that the implementation of law alone cannot be stopped. He cited a decline in social morality due to easy access to pornography through mobile phones and internet. In a conversation with reporters after a review meeting in Ujjain on Saturday, Makwana said, the way vulgarity is being served on the Internet, the brain of children is being distorted.

He said that there are many factor behind the increase in sexual offenses. The news agency PTI quoted Makwana as saying, “There are many reasons behind the increasing incidents of rape. I think it includes the presence of internet, mobile phone, pornographic content and alcohol.”

He said, “Today, a person is connecting with someone else through mobile phones. There are many such reasons for the decline of morality in the society. It is not possible for the police to deal with it alone.”

Makwana also pointed to the lack of monitoring and guidance in homes. He said, “Earlier children used to listen to teachers and family members, but today no one in the house is able to keep an eye on each other.” He further said, “Now all the boundaries are breaking.”

‘Porn content on the Internet is distorting children’s brain’

Reiterating the impact of digital exposure, he said, “The way porn content is being served on the Internet, he is definitely distorting his (children’s) mind. That is why these incidents are happening.”

Incidentally, during the last session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the state government had told the House that in 2024, 20 cases of rape have been registered every day.

According to data from the State Home Department, 6,134 cases of rape were registered in 2020. In 2024, this number increased to 7,294 – an increase of 19 percent.

Makwana’s comment has come at a time when the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata has shook the entire country. This cruel incident that took place earlier this week has created new concerns about public outrage, political debate and safety of women across the country.
