PMAY -U 2.0: Do you want to build or buy your house in the city, but the budget is coming in the way? The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) i.e. PMAY -U can remove your anxiety. The scheme, launched on 25 June 2015, is aimed at providing firm houses to urban poor and middle class people at affordable rates. The second phase of the scheme (PMAY-U 2.0) was launched in the budget of 2024, under which 1 crore families will be able to get homes in the next 5 years.

What are the benefits?
- Direct assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakh: Those who have their own land, they are given this amount to build a house.
- Subsidy on interest: Under CLSS ie Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme, interest subsidy up to Rs 2.67 lakh is available.
- Cheap homes and low fare: Landless people are provided houses at a cheaper rate. The houses built by the government are also given very little rent.
Who can take advantage of the scheme?
Under this scheme, families of EWS (economically weaker sections), LIG (low income group) and HIG (middle income group) can apply, which do not already have any pucca houses in the country. Eligibility is as follows:
- EWS: Annual income up to ₹ 3 lakh
- LIG: Annual Income up to ₹ 6 Lakh
- HIG: Annual Income up to ₹ 9 Lakh
If in the last 20 years, a person has taken advantage of any housing scheme of the Central or State Government, then it will not be eligible for this scheme.
Who will get priority in the scheme?
In this scheme, socially disadvantaged sections are given priority. These include widows, disabled, single women, transgender, scheduled castes/tribes, minorities and street vendors. Apart from this, people associated with schemes like PM Vishwakarma and PM Swanidhi, Anganwadi workers and residents of slums also come on the priority list.
How to apply for housing?
The application process for PMAY -U 2.0 is completely online. Follow the process below to apply:
- Go to the PMAY -U portal and choose ‘Apply for PMAY -U 2.0’.
- Read the necessary guidelines and select the state, annual income and component of the scheme.
- To confirm the eligibility, answer the questions asked and do OTP verification.
- Fill individual, family and residential information in the application form.
- Upload income certificate, Aadhaar number and related documents.
- Reserve the application and submit it.
Now government officials will check your documents. If you live up to the eligibility of the scheme, then the money of government help will come directly to your account.
