Display artist Marina Abramovic wins Pramium Imperial – DW – 07/15/2025

The Premium Imperial, provided by the Japan Art Association, is on the International Art Award, often called the “Nobel Prize of Kala”. The award recipients receive each 15 million yen (€ 87,000 / $ 102,000).

Among them are the performance artists Marina Abramovic, Scottish painter Peter Doig, Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Maura, Hungarian Pianoist Andras Shif and Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa de Korsmaker, the organizers revealed on Tuesday.

‘Full freedom’ through performance

Born in 1946 in Belgrade, Serbia, Marina Abramovic studied art in her hometown and zagreb, Croatia. Developed in interest in performance art, including experimentation with sound installation.

In 1973, the young artist was invited to Edinburgh, Scotland for an international art festival, where he started his first provocative performance work.

The title “Rhythm 10,” Abramovic threw 10 sharp knives between his splashing fingers – a Daredevil Act in which she missed and shed blood. In Edinburgh, where young artists and topical painters met the prestigious German performance artist Joseph Bayes, so he realized that he had found his medium.

“I had complete freedom experience – I felt that my body was without limits, it was infinite; This pain did not matter, that nothing matures – and it all tocuses me,” Remembering Abramovic of that first performance in his 2016 autobiography, “Walls Through Walls.”

“I was intoxicated by the overwelling energy that I had received. That the moment I knew I had got my medium. There was no painting, no object that I could make, everyone could give me that kind of feeling, and it was a feeling that I knew that I would have to find again and again.”

Testing of limits

Abramovic has carved a reputation as a leading performance artist, which continues to test his physical and psychological boundaries.

Probably his most stimulating initial work “Rhythm 0,” a performance in Italy, this time in Naples. In this, Abramovic directed the audience: “There are 72 objects on the table that can be used as desired on me.”

Marina Abramovic and Ulaya lived as free spirits in their small Citroen bus for four years, traveled and performed from Europe.

Balkan Baroc

In 1997, he did a comment on Yugoslav wars in the international section of Venice Bienle, called “Balkan Baroque”, in which he spent seven hours a day in washing the mountain of bloody cow’s bones. His performance was awarded the Golden Lion.

Since the 1990s, she has been teaching young performance artists “Abramovic Vidhi”. She moved to New York in 2000, where despite some local frugality for her work, developed the theater pieces, performance and an encounter with other artists.

In “House with the Ocean View”, the artist spent 12 days without food in three open rooms, in which he created an intimate relationship between himself and the audience.

The topic continued in a 2010 performance at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York, “The Artist is present,” in which she used the lover’s eyes on a table from a wooden stool with the audience members on a table, in which she sits for six hours – stones like Sharon Stone, Tilda Swinton, Beork and Lady Gaga used Kusi.

Decide to be happy

In 2020, Abramovic launched the operative project, “7 Deaths of Maria Calus” at Munich’s Bavarian State Opera. In this, he re-implemented seven of the callus’s most famous on-stage deaths. “Like many opera heroines, what she built on stage, she also died with love. Pain as part of human experience

In 2023, the performance artist had a brush with death that was not inspired by one of his extreme performances.

During a minor operation at the hospital in May, he suffered a pulmonary embolism, due to which he had to undergo three operations and nine blood transfers. She was in deep care for six weeks, spending some time in a coma.

To deal with hard episodes, he used all the skills developed through his performance: “Working with consciousness working with Breathing, Petin,” he later explained at the inauguration of an exhibition at the Royal Academy in September that year.

“We are very afraid of pain. I don’t like pain, but I think pain is a search to import elements in human life,” he said. “Understanding yourself is like a kind of gate to understand the universe.”
