Drone strike hit three oil areas in Iraqi Kurdistan – DW – 07/16/2025

The explosive shop drone killed three oil areas in the Iraksutonomus Kurdistan region in the early hours of Wednesday, making a temporary shutdown.

It is the fifth site targeting a week in the region.

What else do we know about the strike?

According to Kurdish anti -terrorism forces, two drone offering fields and the third hit the nearby base field, both operated by DNO of Norway, around 6 in the local time (0300 UTC) in Zakho district.

A fourth drone later hit an American headquarters Hunt Oil Site in Dohuk province.

Despite some physical damage, there were no casualties.

“Assessment of damage is going on, and the company is expected to resume production after completion of the evaluation,” DNO said.

Who is behind the drone strike on Kurdistan oil fields?

The latest attacks followed a drone strike on the Sarsang field on Tuesday, catching up in production. The targeted region is powered by American firm HKN Energy.

Similar attacks hit Khurmala field on Monday, while a drone was shot near Erbil Airport.

While no group has claimed responsibility, Iraqi pointed to areas controlled by the Iran -backed militia as the origin of the initial investigation drone by safety sources.

Security sources associate such attacks with regional proxy struggles below Iran and the United States and its ally Israel.

Iran supports Shia Muslim terrorist groups in Iraq such as Kataib Hizbullah.

The drone campaign in Baghdad comes amidst tension between oil exports between the central government and the Kurdistan officials and a stalled pipeline for Türkiye.
