Germany and UK Sign Historical Post-Brexit Friendship Treaty-DW-07/17/2025

Germany and Britain on Thursday signed a historical friendship treaty 80 years after the end of World War II.

Chancellor Frederick Merz and British Prime Minister Kir Strandmer sealed the agreement by the previous German government during a meeting in London on Thursday.

What in the treaty?

Agreement – “Kensington Treaty” was dubbed – it includes plans for close security and defense cooperation, a mutual support section in crises, and visa simplification for school exchanges.

After defense, the two sides vowed to secure the “joint export campaigns” for the devices in which they co-manufacture, including typhoon Eurofighter Jet and boxer armored vehicles.

The agreement includes a plan to promote connectivity by establishing a new direct rail connection, which aims to deepen people’s relations with economic and people.

It is important for the UK, so there is a pledge by Germany to help in dealing with illegal immigration.

The agreement was signed at the V&A Museum in London, named after Queen Victoria and her German husband, Prince Albert.

What did the leaders say about the treaty?

“This is a historic day for the German-British relationship,” Merz said after the signature. “We want to work more closely – especially after Britain’s departure from the European Union.” He called the treaty for a long time and said that cooperation will be given in defense, foreign policy and economic and domestic matters.

Merz has repeatedly emphasized the need to keep Britain close to the European Union after exiting her 2020. President Donald Trump has added urges to strengthen the relationship with Russian hazards and doubts about America’s credibility.

Strandmer praised the agreement as “the first of his child”, saying that it is “as the proximity of our relationship as today.”

He said that this agreement was “the statement of intention, a statement of our ambition was a statement to work together.”

The British Premier hosted French President Emmanuel Macron a week before Franco agreed to British cooperation.

The three countries have deepened the relationship through the E3 format – in recent months, a diplomatic coordination mechanism between France, Germany and the UK traveled to Kiev in the first week of Merz as a Chancellor.

The two countries already signed a defense agreement in October, the “Trinity House Agreement” “Trinity House Agreement” to cooperate and strengthen its ability to cooperate and practice on the eastern flank. In May, they were therefore aggressive at the joint development of accurate crying with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers (about 1.200 mi), in which European countries could participate in it.
