In which part did Drews leader Al-Hizri play in Syrian violence? – DW – 07/22/2025

In the last ten days, as a fatal violence occurred in the southern Syrian province of Swida, there was a name that came up: Hikmat al-Hijri.

A 60 -year -old spiritual leader from the Syrian’s Druz community played a major role in the incidents in which more than 500 people were killed and threatened to turn Syrian’s delicate infection, after decades ruled by a dictatorship.

Al-Hizri critics have convicted their combative attitude towards the new Syrian government what happened to increase the violence. They describe her as a “without warlords”, with a powerful traitor and a drug smugglers for their country with a relationship with the remains of the Syrian dictatorship of Syrian dictatorship. But his fans say that the draus spiritual leader is “a symbol of dignity and nobility”, which was right to protect his community against the new Syrian government and his potentially dangerous followers.

Inheritance power

The status of the Drews Spiritual Leader is passed through family lines, and his elder brother, after Ahmed, died in 2012 in an unexpected car an actor-Aad regime suspected-Chhoti Al-Haziri, born in June 1965, was given the post in Vengeuela.

He is one of the three main religious leaders of the Drews community in Syria. Other you are Yesef Jarbou and Hammoud al-Hanavi. Spiritual leaders are as a reference point on social, moral and religious matters and for any major decision, a consensus is considered between the three.

While the Assad rule was in power, and during the Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011 and ended in 2024, the situation of the Al-Hijri can be described as one of the best political expeditions. Several times he supported the Assad regime, urging the young dreos to fight for the Syrian dictator Bashar Assad. But by 2023, he was speaking to the Drews protesters and against the regime.

Hey, although it is not alone, though. The other two drews spiritual leaders supported the Assad rule several times.

There are squabbing between the three of the three who are primary leaders of the Drews community in Syria and who speak for it. Reports suggest that Jarbo and Al-Hanavi separated from al-Hizri.

Villain or hero?

Since the expulsion of the Assad regime and the formation of a new, interim government, under the chairmanship of Ahmed Al-Shara, the leader of an Islamist rebel group, who was leading the December invasive against Assad, has become an even more controversial.

Drews live mainly in the southern Syrian province of Sweda and like the Kurds of Syria, the community is interacting on its participation in the new Syria.

Syria is a Sunni-majority country-heard Muslims who create 70% of the country’s population and various Syrian religious and ethnic minorities are worried about their future.

Some, like the Kurds, they have suggested that they be allowed to run their territory, which fears the country can be divided into separate areas. Therefore, talks are going on on how to integrate armed militia across the country and whether the state should have a monopoly on arms.

These are a type of talks, including al-Hizri. He is considered the most combative, when it comes to cooperating with the new leaders of the country, with a full attitude that is different from the Jarbo and Al-Hanvi, who usually advised to find ways to come up with the government of Al-Shara.

For example, in March, an understanding of a handwritten memorandum was broadcast between the government and the drew officials, stating that the Drews and the central government came on an agreement about their mutual future. Al-Hizri was in the meeting where it was drafted, but did not sign it and then later said that he disagreed with it.

The interim government does not have the total control of national security and recently outbreaks of violence (in which some government soldiers may be well involved) have not done much to assure minority humor that they will be safe. This is why some believe that the attitude of Al-Hiji is correct.

What did Al-Hizari do during recent violence?

Since July 13, the tight-for-cut kidnapping between the drews and the Bedouin communities was blown into a major battle, several ceasefire negotiations and even agreed by other drains leaders. However, after Ridge agreed, Al-Hizri rejected him.

Some observers say he was right to do. The British-Iraqi researcher and analyst Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi says he spoke to the leaders of the Drews Fighters in Sweda, who disagreed with Previoly with Al-Hijri’s anti-government stance. But he told him, “At the same time, discussions were being discussed, which was discovered as joint patrolling. [Sweida] Faction and internal [Syrian government] Al-Tamimi said that security forces were being violated by government forces.

During this month’s violence, every party has been accused of atrocities – drains fighters, Sunni fighters and government forces. The online disinfectant is destroyed and until the violence is investigated, it would be difficult to know who was really responsible for what.

The ideas of Al-Hijri on the new government are reportedly supported by a body named Saweda Military Council, which was formed immediately after the Asad regime. Critics accused the council of protecting the military remains of the Assad regime and said that it could be involved in drug trafficking and other crimes.

Traitors for Syria?

When the Syrian Sunni fighters responded elsewhere in the country, they said that they would travel to fight drews in Sweda, Al-Hijri called the international community including the US and Israel to protect the draus.

Later on the same day, July 16, Israel Bombat Central Damascus. Due to this, Al-Hiji leg called a traitor for his country. This anger about Israel – both countries are still considered to do times – whether it was mistakenly expanded to the drew community, other Syrians said they should all be traitors.

It is almost impossible to mention who is the villains or heroes of recent events from fast moving events, surrounded approaches and long -lasting prejudices. Probably the al-Hizri who currently represents the most most represents is the lacquer of consensus in the Drews community.

There is no doubt that recent incidents, in which Al-Hizri’s attitude and Rai compared the violence, have reduced communal tension in Syria, scared of communal insecurity. A ceasefire appears to be holding a break, but after the violence of the previous week, one thing is becoming clear: even other draus leaders in Lebanon have continued the urge for diplomacy, damaging the sentiments of the Syrian Druz community towards their new central government.
