European Union-China relations deteriorate before the Beijing Summit

The relationship between the European Union and China hit the rock bottom before the summit.

Both sides have significant disagreements on trade, the European Union complained to uneven access to the Chinese market for the European Union firms, Chinese’s chokes on rare earth minerals, as well as industrial policies and heavy subsidies in favor of Chinese companies.

Chinese President Xi Jinping rejected an invitation to participate, the talks were taken from Brussels to Beijing, and then reduced to two to one day.

China is a ‘important partner’ for Europe, says Xinhua

State news agency Xinhua said in a piece of comment on Thursday, China is a “important partner” for the European Union.

This comes a few hours before a major European Union-China summit to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic partnership.

Xinhua wrote, “As the international landscape grows rapidly, the anniversary provides a reminder at a time: China is an important partner for Europe, not a systemic rival,” Xinhua wrote.

“Like all major economic players, China and the European Union do not agree on everything. But there is no conflict as disagreement,” Xinhua said, saying that the relationship needs more trust.

European Union, China mark diplomatic milestone

The European Union and China are celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing bilateral diplomatic relations.

European Commission Chairman Ursula Lean and European Council Chairman Antonio Costa are in Beijing on Thursday for the occasion and will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Lee Kiang and other top leaders.

China and the European Union are the second most important trading partners of one other, but both sides were in Ukraine, which provoked market access, industrial policies and Russia’s instigation.
