Mamdani was born in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. At the age of seven, he moved to New York and received American citizenship in 2018. He is active as a Democratic Socialist in the New York State Assembly. His family has a deep connection with Uganda, where his father Mahmood Mamdani is a prestigious academic and writer.

Wedding ceremony surrounded in controversies
Till Friday, the tents of the military style were removed and the private guard of Mamdani took over the gate. However, the ceremony was engulfed in controversies, as the former Ugandai Supreme Court Judge George Kanyehimba was mourning (‘Okkungubaga’) in the neighborhood after the death of Judge George Kanyeimba on 14 July. Uganda President Yovery Museweni also visited the area to pay tribute, which blocked the roads. Local people called it “insensitive”, as the funeral was still left. One local said, “The wedding celebration was insensitive in the week of mourning.”
