Second arson attack on the railway line in two days – DW – 08/01/2025

The German police said on Friday that a major railway line in the western city of Daseldorf had collided with the attack of another arson in two days, a cable duct a few hours after the fire broke out at the same stretch.

The police told the German DPA news agency that the equipment used was the same as discovered after Thursday’s Blaze, which had closed a major line between Daseldorf and nearby city of Duceburg, once again joined the line.

“We believe that both attacks were carried out at the same time,” a police spokesperson said, confirming that the authorities had finished collecting the evidence by noon and the repair was being wolded.

The second incident was first discovered in the first 1.8 kilometers (1.1 mi) north near the city of Angermund.

The German railway operator Dutash sister spoke of “barbarism” and warned of train variations and delays. It said that the disruption will continue till at least Saturday morning.

Among the affected train services, Daseldorf International Airport is serving the fourth most busy airport in Germany.

Local media reported long working at Daseldorf and Duisburg Central stations on Friday morning as the passengers tried to arrange an alternative journey – but allegedly did not mean chaos, many people had the required disruption due to Thursday’s sabotage.

Has anyone claimed responsibility?

The responsibility for Thursday’s incident was claimed by a self-exploited “Angry Birds Commando”, which posted a statement on reading leftist platform indimedia: “Many things do wild work that are informally better without an industrial system.”

Northern Rhine-Westphalia state internal minister Herbert Reul said, “Based on the understanding of this act of our officials’s current evaluation and sabotage, it was leftist extremists, who are trying to return back in pre-industrial times.”

Angry Birds Commandos are “known as our authorities as a leftist extremist campaign. It has made several acts of sabotage in the Daseldorf region in recent years,” Reeul said at a press conference in the city.

No person or group has yet claimed direct responsibility for the Friday incident, although the statement posted on Thursday mentioned “several attacks” in the Daseldorf region.

With 700–800 daily connections, the Daseldorf-Dusberg route creates parts of one of the busiest rail lines in Germany, with having a knock-on effect in the form of Berlin, Frankfurt and Netherlands.
