India US Trade Deal: A big relief news has come out amidst tension in business relations between India and America. While US President Donald Trump has announced to impose 25% tariff (import duty) on India, he has exempted diesel, aircraft fuel and some other important petroleum products. This has brought huge relief to those companies that export fuel to the US. In the midst of this stress, there is going to be a matter of important issue. Ricky Gill, US President Donald Trump’s most senior advisor to South Asia affairs, is reaching India next week. But the picture is not completely clear yet. The Trump administration had talked about imposing a ‘fine’ on energy and defense business with Russia of India, but when and how this fine will be, there is still a mystery on it.

What happened in Trump’s tariff order?

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump expressed concern over India’s current trade policies in a press conference and said that India would be imposed 25% tariffs. At the same time, he also added that a strict step can be taken soon on India’s strategic relations with Russia. But when the executive order with his signature came to light, there was a 25% fee on some Indian goods coming to America only. Interestingly, petroleum products like diesel, refined fuel, crude oil, LNG (LNG), electricity and coal were placed in the list of discounts. Not only this, medicines, electronics and smartphones are also in this list.

According to government data, India exported about 48.6 lakh tonnes of petroleum products to the US in 2024-25, with more than $ 4 billion. Experts say that due to this exemption, fuel exports from India to America will continue to run as before. India’s presence in America will remain, due to which the big companies of the energy sector will not be harmed.

Still ongoing talk in Indo-US

Meanwhile, in the US and India, there is going to be a conversation related to the trade deal once again. Ricky Gill is a senior director of South and Central Asia Affairs at the National Security Counsel Office of America (NSC). He has been invited by India’s National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) for a meeting to be held in Delhi on 5 and 6 August. This meeting will be focused on the future of India-Midal East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Officials said that the journey was planned several weeks ago and it has no relation with the existing trade issues between the two countries.
