Indian officials said on Tuesday that a cloudbers in the northern state of Uttarakhand flooded the flash, washing a Himalayan village.
According to a local official, at least four people were killed. Indian broadcaster NDTV reported that more than 50 were expected to disappear.
What do we know so far
Flood waters shook the houses, removed the roads and destroyed a local market in Dharli village.
Prahnt Arya told the administrative officer that about a dozen hotels were washed and many shops collapsed.
A stream of water appears in the footage on social media, which seems to wipe the houses under a hill towards the village.
The police encouraged people to stay away from rivers.
Rescue team deployed
The Indian Army said that its first teams reached Dharli, which was hit by a “large -scale mudslide”, causing a sudden flow of debris and water.
State Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami said that rescue teams were “posted as war”.
“We are making every effort to save life and provide relief,” Heer said in a statement.
The National Disaster Management Authority asked the federal government to assist for helicopters, as rescue teams struggled to reach the remote area.
Flash flood in Uttarakhand
The Himalayan region is prone to floods and landslides during the monsoon season, with cloudbursts to make the event more intensified.
In 2021, more than 200 people were killed in Uttarakhand as flash floods were swept away by two hydroelectric projects.
There are about 10,000 glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, many of which are recurring due to climate change.
