Spain F 35 JET: Spain has canceled the purchase scheme of American F-35 fighter aircraft, which has caused a major setback to America. Spain will now focus on European defense equipment.

Highlights
- Spain canceled the purchase of American F-35 fighter aircraft
- Spain will now focus on European defense equipment
- This proved to be a major setback for America
In 2023, Spain made a provision of about $ 7.24 billion for new fighter aircraft in its defense budget. It was believed that this amount would be used in the purchase of high-tech aircraft like F-35. But this year, Spain’s plan to spend the additional 10.5 billion euros found for the defense sector in Europe changed the whole picture. The government made it clear that it would focus on European defense equipment rather than American aircraft. This decision turned America’s expectations.
Reply to tariff threat
Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised to meet NATO’s 2% GDP target by increasing defense spending earlier this year. But at the NATO conference held in June, he refused to increase the expenditure by 5%. US President Donald Trump was enraged by this. Trump warned Spain that if he does not increase defense spending, additional fees would be imposed on his goods. Trump’s threat became the reason for further confirmation of Spain’s decision.
New shock for America
This step of Spain is making it difficult not only for the US, but also for Lockheed Martin. The F-35 program is already under the circle of criticism due to increasing costs and technical flaws. Recently a fighter jet crashed in America. On the other hand, the F-35 of the British Navy in India stood for more than a month. Now turning the face of NATO’s associate countries is questioning the credibility of America. Spain’s Ministry of Defense and Lockheed Martin have not commented on the issue.
