New Delhi. US Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Quatra held talks with Republican Senator Lindsay Graham on Friday. This is the first important conversation with the American senator from India after the announcement of US President Donald Trump’s tariff. Lindsay Graham is considered to be close to President Trump.

It is being told that Quatra shared India’s vision on India’s energy security and increasing energy trade from America during talks with Graham. It is also important to know that Lindsay Graham has strongly supported Trump’s tariff on India.

In fact, on August 6, Donald Trump had signed an executive order to impose an additional 25 percent duty on imported goods from India when the oil purchases from Russia continued. With this, the fee in the US on Indian products has now increased to 50 percent.

This step is expected to affect areas like textile, sea products and leather exports. Reacting to this development, India said that these steps are ‘unfair and indiscriminate’. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that it is very unfortunate that the US has decided to impose additional fees on India. Also, India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.

Trump had announced a 25 percent fee on India last week. He signed the order imposing additional fees a few hours before the implementation of this fee. After this order, the total fee on Indian goods will be 50 percent except for some concession items.

The order stated, “Fee imposed according to the price … will be in addition to any other duty, fees, tax, recovery and charge applied to such imports.” The initial fee will be effective from August 7, while the additional fee will be applicable after 21 days.

Trump had warned on August 5 that he would announce a heavy duty on India in 24 hours to buy oil and gas from Russia. After the new fee, the products of India and Brazil in the US will cost the highest 50 percent fee. In such a situation, the competitive countries of India will be in a better position in the American market as their fee is low.
