German Chanman Frederick Merz said that Germany’s stance on the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is unchanged despite its government’s order to suspend arms to Israel, which can be used in Gaza.
“We will continue to help the country defend ourselves,” Merz on Sunday told the German public broadcaster ARD, stating that despite this stance, the German government cannot supply arms to a conflict, where thousands of civilians are killed.
Israel’s security cabinet announced that Israel entered partially to export German weapons to Israel after Israel’s announcement to handle the city of Gaza.
The scheme has been continuously continuously by the United Nations chief Antonio Gutral and many countries in the form of UK, France and Canada, which believe that it will increase the ongoing human crisis of Gaza.
Merz takes responsibility amidst criticism
“Solidarity with Israel does not mean that we consider every decision to be good by the Israeli government, or we support it, even to the extent of providing military assistance in the form of weapons,” Merz said, ie emphasizing the new policy.
The Chancellor said, “I did not make this decision alone, but at the end of the day, I am completely responsible for it.”
The decision to prevent aggressive weapons exports that can be used in Israel in Gaza, has been found with criticism with the Chancellor’s own Conservative Party (CDU) and his Bavarian Sister Party (CSU).
CDU Bundestag MLA Carssten Müller chose the decision “in the strongest terms”, while saying that it ignores the importance of security cooperation with Israel for the German Army and NATO.
Members of Bavaria’s CSU party also exported arms.
Alexander Hoffman, leader of CSU Parliamentary Group at Bundestag, told German paper on Saturday Picture His party was not involved in merge’s decision and “We consider it suspicious.”
CDU MP and foreign policy expert Norbert Rotgen, however, supported Merz’s decision. Röttgen told Rainiscay Post On Saturday, newspaper that he supported exports: “This response is correct and has become unexpectedly unavoidable due to the latest decisions by the Government of Israel.”
Conservative block coalition partners, center-left social democrats (SPD), support large-scale decisions.
Netanyahu says
At a press conference for Forent Media on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Merz said as a “deer” under the pressure of news reports, which the Israeli leader declared false. Netanyahu said he hopes that the German Chancellor would change his decision.
Germany is one of Israel’s Stoshest supporters, in which former Chancellor Angela Merkel said Israeli’s security is Germany’s state rasan (cause of state). Germany took a special responsibility for Israel due to Holocaust, where 6 million Jews were killed by the German Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945.
Germany stands by Israel and supported Israel’s military operation in Gaza after Israel’s terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Merz’s decision to export some to Israel is an important course change by Germany, as Israel has found itself a rapidly different from its colleagues in Europe.
In recent weeks, France and Britain stated that they would formally identify the Palestinian stage, criticizing Netanyahu.
