Israeli minister revealed controversial West Bank settlements – DW – 08/14/2025

An Israeli minister unveiled a plan for new settlements at the West Bank occupied on Thursday, which aims to reject the possibility of Palestinian platform. Israel has captured the West Bank since 1967.

A United Nations spokesman called to reversed the decision to settle with Israel, which would eliminate the possibilities of a two-state solution, stating that Israel’s settlements go against international law.

What do we know about the settlement scheme so far?

Israeli far-flung Finance Minister Bezelle Smotrich announced the plan, which extends development in an open path of land in the east of Jerusalem, known as E1. The Israeli government will construct about 3,500 new apartments to enlarge the Israeli settlement of Malle Daurim, which is located next to E1.

Critics say the new settlement scheme will effectively divide West Bank into two parts. Announcing the settlements, a statement issued by Smotrich’s office stated that he was “burying the idea of a Palestinian kingdom”.

Smotrich’s announcement plans to formally recognize a Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly in September as France, UK and Canada. This step is being made as a humanitarian crisis in Gaza amidst Israeli military operations against Hamas’s terrorist group and continuous construction of settlements at West Bank.

Smotrich said during a press conference at Malle Adamim, “This reality is the idea of a Palestinian kingdom at the end, because there is nothing to recognize and not to recognize anyone.”

“Anyone in the world who tries to identify the state of Palestinian today will get to answer us on the ground,” he said.

Smotrich, who heads the party National Religious Party – Religious Zononism, threatened to “claim full Israeli sovereignty” in all areas of Samaria, if France, UK and Canada proceed with their plan to identify the Palestinian platform. Judea and Samaria are an Israeli word that is often used to refer to West Bank.

The plan given by Smotrich will divide the occupied West Bank, Aviv Tatarski, a researcher at the IR Emim organization, told DW.

“It breaks the West Bank into a northern part and southern part,” Heer said, saying that it would make a Palestinian kingdom “not possible.”

Tatarski said that while Smotrich is leading the charge, “The entire Israeli government is behind it.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Tatarski said, Smotrich is being allowed to take a spotlight to avoid international criticism.

More than 700,000 live in Israeli West Bank and Eastern Jerusalem, captured by Israel in 1967 and where Palestinians are intended to be built in an independent state.

The international community overwhelmetically considers Israeli settlement construction in the thesis region to be an obstacle for illegal and peace. Israel rejected the interpretation, stating that the West Bank is “disputed” rather than the “occupied” area.

What has America said about Smotrich’s disposal plan?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a member of the right -wing Likud Party, has not yet commented on Smotrich’s plan. However, Smotrich said that Netanyahu and Trump support new settlement housing units.

The E1 scheme will require formal government approval. If the plan is supported by the Israeli government, the construction of new buildings in the dirty Adunim Basti can begin in about a year.

In the Middle East, Palestinian officials, rights groups and Arab countries got steps to develop the E1 path of land.

Qatar said that the scheme is “a clear violation of international validity”, Doha “underlined the immediate requirement for the international community to unite Israel to force Israel to stop its settled expansion plans and force them to follow international resolutions.”
