Hazelnut Frost of Türkiye threatens chocolate supply chain – DW – 08/12/2025

We have increased from toilet paper to toilet paper, from toilet paper, from toilet paper, during the toilet paper between Ukraine war and eggs during the outbreak of bird flu.

The latest casualties are hazelnuts, due to a rare and destruction frost in Türkiye in April, the world’s largest supplier, and ongoing climate change pressure.

Since April, Hazelnut prices have jumped over 35%, as exporters ran to buy more limited supply. At one point, the prices of Turkish Hazelnut futures removed 200 lira ($ 4.91, € 4.22) through kilograms, with $ 10 per kg of international predictions.

This deficiency is ready to barely hit the sweet teeth, as the cost of the nutella, the dear chocolate-hezalan is spread, rapid prices increase, as well as with oath chocolate and boocked accessories.

Nutella’s hazelnut headache

Although hazelnuts do not receive much attention, they are a major component in many premium and mass market products. The bets are high for brands such as pharyro, which makes nutella and allegedly uses a quarter of the world’s hazelnut supply.

Nutela mainly contains sugar and palm oil, but hazeluts form 13% of the recipe. Millions of chocolate jars are sold, meaning that small price also increases production costs and squeezes margin.

If continuous, the lack of hazelnuts may be forced to improve dishes for their sweet treatment. Confectioners can be forced to reduce the amount of products or pass costs on consumers such as the popular celebration period comes close.

The roots of the pharyro are in the Pedamont region of Italy, where high quality Tonda Gentle Hazelons are grown. In addition to Italy, Ferrero sources the annual hazelnuts from Türkiye, Chile and the United States.

Italian food giants are therefore a Ferrero Dare, Kids Bueno and Mon Cherry Hazelnut Chocolate, among others, including all drainage.

Expressing concern about the lack of a statement to DW, the company said: “Ferrero Group diversify sourcing from many origin worldwide and thanks to its long -term strategy, Ferrero does not expect any supply to their products. ,

The firm stated that its sourcing strategy ensured “a consecutive year supply”.

How bad is the lack of hazelnut?

In June, Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat) estimates put the 2025 crop in 520,000 MT, vs. around 750,000 tonnes expected, although it was later modified.

The International Nut and Dride Fruit Council (Inc.) told DW that Frost in Turkey had cut the forecast of the hazelnut crop in about 22% to 601,000 tons of-shells, citing a more optimistic project from the Black Sea Exporters Association (KIB).

For Inc., the latest estimates show that the country is lost about 167,000 tonnes for frost, compared to the initial fears of about 250,000.

Fortunately, Turkey withdrew some of its 2022 crops – around 150,000 MT, Inc. Said, which is now instigated. This should help reduce the deficiency.

Hazelnuts are specifically cut in late summer, uniquely. However, in the years of surplus, Türkiye often stores additional crops for future sales as farmers estimate high prices.

Confectioner wants other supply

Corporate buyers are now looking to reduce Chile, Georgia and America to reduce dependence on Turkey, but secretly hoping that prices are stable if 2025 Turkish crop is more and better.

“Hazelnut crop in Türkiye starts from August 10 and is expected to be completed in mid -September,” T.He told DW in a written statement by German Confectioners Association BDSI. BDSI said that it would only assess the impact on the crop.

Other hazelnuts face challenges therefore. Chile and Georgia produce much less than Turkey, and US Hazelnuts, mainly from Oregon, differ in taste. The production takes several years to scale elsewhere, as hazelnut trees take 5-7 years to mature, limiting short-term relief.

Some people believe that Turkey was delayed in declaring a base hazelnut value last year, so a vacuum left a vacuum that was filled by bookies and exporters. The KIB traditionally determines a price floor at the beginning of the crop to stabilize the market and direct the farmer’s expectations.

But there is a possibility of a lack of base price, there is a possibility of lack, increased prices and triggered nervousness. Sensation for profit opportunities, farmers with hero stock, tightening further supply.

Changing climate can cause lack

The deficiency highlights so much intensive vulnerability: the fragility of crop-dependent areas for the effects of climate change.

Hazelles are particularly sensitive to jumping frosts, and this year’s cold snap in Türkiye is a strong reminder that climate crisis does not only mean heat, but unpredictable.

Coffee and Coco have recently faced climate disruption. Lack of hazelnuts has forced confectioners to source and reconsider the content for their sweet treatment.

The expert has warned that irregularly overcrowds, threatening hazelnuts, almonds, and walnuts.
