Bus accident killed dozens of Afghans exempted from Iran – DW – 08/20/2025

Dozens of Afghans who came out of Iran died on Tuesday after a bus accident in western Afghanistan.

Citing local authorities, the AFP news agency reported that more than 50 people were killed in the accident.

What is known about the accident

Harat Provincial Government spokesperson, Mohammad Yusuf Saeedi, told the AFP that the bus was carrying the Afghans who were deported from Iran and were going to Kabul.

Police said that the bus first hit a motorcycle and then hit the truck, which was carrying fuel, burning in flames.

Saeedi said, “All passengers were migrants to board a vehicle in Islam.”

Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the German news agency DPA that the victims were deported from Iran, but said that further details were not available immediately.

A large number of Afghans – who fled for decades of war and humanity – have returned from Iran in recent months to force millions of Afghan migrants from Tehran to leave.

According to the United Nations, more than 1.2 million Afghans have returned or have been forced to return from Iran and Pakistan alone this year.
