China is closely looking at Russia on the ongoing US LED diplomatic efforts to stop Russia.
US President Donald Trump spoke to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, White House envoy Steve Witchoff said that Moscow had done “some concessions”, which agreed that the US could provide protection to Ukraine like NATO.
Calling it a “historical decision”, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelancesi welcomed the trump administration’s pledge to provide security guarantee for Ukraine.
Zelanski is meeting Trump in Washington on Monday, as well as hosting prominent European leaders, including German Chanman Frederick Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and European Commission Chairman Ursula von deer Leyne.
Prior to Monday’s meeting, China – a close aide from Russia – called “all sides” to “as soon as possible” to agree with peace.
“China welcomed all attempts to find a peaceful solution between the US and Russia,” said Mao Ning, a Chinese government spokesperson in Beijing.
Trump-Putin Talk Signal Opportunity for China
Yes Ian Chong, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the National University of Singapore, told DW that the Trump-Putin Summit was “a useful point of departure” for Beijing “to see how Trump interacts in high-duns. ,
Despite the guarantee of American pledge for Ukraine, Trump, after negotiating with Putin, urged Ukraine to accept a final peace deal associated with regional concessions to shift his position for the ceasefire from Pressure Russia.
During the meeting, Putin allegedly offered to freeze most of the front lines, if Kiev cited all of Donnetsk – an industrial area that is one of the main goals of Moscow. Russia currently controls about 70% of the region.
Trump later told Fox News that he advised Ukraine to “make a deal” because “Russia is a great power and not them.”
Zelancesi allegedly rejected the deal and wrote on the social media platform X that Russia refuses to agree to the ceasefire “complicates the situation.”
Ven-T Sung, a non-resident partner of the Global China Hub of the Atlantic Council, said, “It gives a vibe that everything is up to conversation,” referring to the Trump-Putin Summit.
“This is music for China’s ears because China likes to keep those political values [and] Differences on one side when working with other countries. And it seems that the way Trump also likes, “he said.
China is cautious on ‘sensitive issues’
However, Chong said, Trump’s “incompatibility” is therefore unexpected indications to China.
“Beijing may want to behave with Trump with some caution, take a place in a meeting and it at least replaces it and it is not completely clear in which direction he can change his mind,” he said.
Experts say the American Russia Summit has given Beijing an opportunity to draw lessons to their own attitude to deal with Washington, including tension on the Trade, Taiwan and South China Sea.
Next to a conversation with Putin, Trump told the media that Chinese President Xi Jinpinghad once told him that China would not attack Taiwan, while what Trump did in the office.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington later stated that Taiwan’s theme in China-US relations is “most important and sensitive issue”, without mentioning Trump’s statement.
The US and its associates have long worked to prevent China from taking military action against Taiwan, which claims Beijing and threatens to handle the force if necessary.
Chong said that Trump’s message on Taiwan’s issue was probably a more gear city in the outside world than Beijing.
Chong said, “What we have seen is consistent with Trump so that he is still that he wants to sofa as some kind of peacemaker.”
There was no possibility of changing China’s approach on Ukraine
Pointing to Trump’s clear desire to reach a peace agreement with Moscow, Sung said, “There is no reason for China to move away from its current perspective on Ukraine’s policy.”
Since Russia began its full -scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, China depicted itself as a neutral party in efforts to resolve the “Ukraine crisis”, but has faced Western criticism on Moscow’s close ties and has been accused of supporting the invasion.
Trump has threatened secondary sanctions on countries that continue to buy Russia oil, which China and India remain the two largest buyers.
The US President has announced that Washington would increase duties up to 50% on some Indian goods – the highest imposed on any American trading partner – cited the import of new Delhi of Russian oil.
Hey, however, refrained from implementing similar tariffs on China.
“Beijing probably takes more advantage of it than in India,” Chong said.
China-US trade talks were recently extended for another 90 days, to transfer the time limit on 10 November, to address issues including market access, rare earth minerals and chip exports.
Chong said it is unclear how Russia’s talks with the US would affect what can bring Beijing and Washington on the table, but “remains suspicious that China will original its relations with Russia at this point.”
