For the first time since 2011, less refugees living in Germany
The total number of refugees in Germany has fallen for the first time in 10 years, according to government data made public on Friday.
Germany’s refugee population declined by around 50,000 in the first half of 2025, from 3.55 million to 3.50 million in the end of 2024, a parliamentary query response to the Left party show.
It marks the first drop of total number of refugees living in Germany since 2011.
The total number includes recent arrival and long-term inhabitants as well as Ukraine refugees.
The leftist party stated that the decline reflects a combination of exile, voluntary departure and increase in naturalization.
Data from the Interior Ministry suggests that 83,150 Syrians were awarded German citizenship, although not all subjects were refugees.
Of about 3.5 million refugees, some 492,000 currently hold an uncertain position, including asylum, whose claims are being processed and people are allowed to live in Germany. In late July, 1.27 million refugees from Ukraine were living in Germany.
Clara Bunger of the Left Party called the fall as “no reason for the celebration”, saying that less people were making the need of security through the boundaries of the European Union.
