Protest on flood control Ms. – DW – 09/21/2025

Thousands of people in the Philippines took the streets on Sunday to protest against alleged corruption on pleural or inferior flood control projects.

The organizers alone estimated voting in about 130,000 people in the capital of Manila, where the protesters collected in Luneta Park and EDSA People Power Monument, which recalls the mass rebellion that excluded the father of President Ferdinand Marcos Junior.

Many politicians were in attendance in rallies, some of which were supported by powerful Catholic Church.

“Our aim is not to destabilize our democracy,” said Cardinal Pablo Vergilio David, head of the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines.

Officials said they arrested 17 people, who allegedly arrested three rocks in the riot police and set fire to a barricade truck near the President’s Mahal.

Why are Philipino protesting?

A scam has emerged in the Philippines, as the ether was detected by billions of dollars of flood-control projects, the country was detected, months after the deadly monsoon was destroyed.

The Finance Department has estimated that the Philippine economy has lost 118.5 billion peso ($ 2 billion, € 1.75 billion) from 2023 to 2025 due to corruption in flood control projects, while Greenpeace suggested that the number is close to $ 18 billion.

Public resentment has increased in recent weeks after Ferdinand Marcos Jr. exposed the scam in a nation’s address in July.

In September, the owners of a construction firm brought about 30 MPs and officials of the Public Works and Highways Department (DPWH) department to take cash payments.

Marcos said that he did not blame the public for “a bit” for protesting on Sunday, but urged him to be peaceful.
