Elections were opened in Guinea on Sunday for a referendum which could allow the military leader of the West African country to run for the President.
General Maamdi Dowmboya rejected power in a coup in 2021 and vowed to return the country to civil rule by the end of last year.
Although the draft will pave the way for the constitution elections to be the hero of the elections, it is controversial as it will make army members difficult to seek the office, increase the presidential from five years to seven years and run the elections for political parties in elections.
The “yes” campaign has several rallies, Quran readings and concerts of Nayak, and the conkree is plaster with the poster.
Amidst a rift on the opposition, the “no” campaign is non-existing, mostly being run on social media.
Polls are scheduled for closing at 6:00 pm local time, but the electoral officials said that the results will not be as soon as possible till Tuesday evening.
Opposition boycott vote
The referendum is expected to be passed as two main opposition leaders, Selou Dalin Dialo and former President Alpha Konde, have been called to boycott the vote. Both his parties are currently suspended.
Suspended renewal and Pragati Party President Rafiyu Sow said that more than half of the population of Guinea cannot read or write and hence only the “yes” camp can be in information about the new constitution.
“Our workers and supporters have no knowledge of this constitution. The moment we were excluded were kept out,” he told the Associated Press. “We, who were about to help Guinies understand what is written in it, we are also forbidden to speak.”
The United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioners is “peaceful and transparent to military officers to ensure Sunday’s constitutional referendum.”
It states that “recent restrictions on political parties and media outlets raise serious questions about inclusive and free partnership for all.”
Guinea is one of the many West African countries including Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where the army takes power and delayed return to civil rule.
Thesis leaders have wiped out to cut relations with their former colonists, France in favor of relations with Russia.
