Hanuman Statue Controversy in America: In the state of Texas, USA, controversy has increased over the 90 -foot -tall statue of Hanuman. The statement of local Republican leader and Senate candidate Alexander Duncan on X has deeply hurt the Hindu community and others. There is anger among American Hindus. Actually, while sharing the video of the statue, Duncan wrote- Why are we allowing a false statue and false Hindu deity in Texas? We are a Christian nation!

This statement not only angered the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), but has also waged a wide debate on social media. HAF has lodged a complaint with Duncan’s statement in the Texas GOP, calling Duncan’s statement anti-Hindu and inflammatory. HAF wrote on X- Namaste Texas GOP, will you discipline your Senate candidate, who is violating your guidelines. Anti-Hindu is spreading hatred.

The organization emphasized that this statement promotes religious discrimination and is against the spirit of the US Constitution. Duncan’s post gave birth to other users equal hatred comments, seeking to demolish the statue. One user wrote- This is a monkey statue, remove it.

Root of dispute

The root of the controversy is the Statue of Union established in Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sughar Land, the tallest Hanuman statue in North America. Weighing 90 feet high and 90 tonnes, this bronze statue was installed in August 2024, which was inaugurated on India’s Independence Day. This statue is a symbol of devotion, power and unity, which shows the role of Lord Rama and Hanuman who united Sita in the Hindu mythology. According to the temple, this project is based on the vision of Swami Chinn Jaiar, which gives the message of equality and peace.

This is the fourth tallest statue in America, which comes after Statue of Liberty. Duncan’s statement comes amidst H-1B visa controversy where some Republican leaders are making rhetoric against Indian migrants. In another post, Duncan cited the Bible and said- you should not keep any other deity… No idol or shape should be made.

Earlier, this statue was objected by orthodox Americans. It was described as an idol of foreign deity. According to a report by Newsweek, Maga (Make America Great Again) supporters called it a Hindu demon. Reactions on social media are fast. One user wrote- Believe whatever you want, but it is not freedom to call the trust of others a liar. Another user wrote- You do not have the right to decide whether the country is Christian or not- we are a country of many religions. Another user questioned- since when we allow a religion that is built on many beliefs?
