United Nations General Assembly: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is a major part of the United Nations, which includes representatives of all member countries. Its annual session is held every year at the United Nations Headquarters located in New York City. The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly has started on 9 September. The first day of the high level general debate will be on Tuesday 23 September. The main theme of which will be, ‘Better together: 80 years and more for human rights.’

Why UNGA occurs in September
The session of the United Nations General Assembly begins on the third Tuesday of September and lasts till December. If required, one may continue till the start of the next session in September next year. It is part of an established tradition and process, which has been set under the United Nations Charter. This system gives all 193 member countries an opportunity to gather annually and discuss global issues. The session provides an important platform for the heads of state, heads of government and foreign ministers from all over the world to come together and participate in bilateral and multilateral meetings. The time of September is considered suitable for deciding the agenda and action plans of the year, so that they can be worked on the rest of the year.

Global Crisis and Cooperation: Given the worldwide struggles, such as Gaza and Ukraine, global peace and security are in the main agenda. Along with this, increasing coordination and cooperation between member countries is also an important issue to deal with ‘global crises’ like climate change, inequality and technical risks.

Improvement in United Nations: On the occasion of the organization’s 80th anniversary, the need for reforms to make the United Nations more effective and relevant for the future has been emphasized. This includes issues such as improvement in security council, increasing role of ‘Global South’ and change in funding models.

Sustainable Development Goal: Discussing and taking action towards achieving sustainable development goals like poverty, starvation, education and health is also part of the agenda.

Multivator World System: India has presented its view on the need for a multi -polar world system, in which the power of the world is distributed among many countries rather than one or two countries.

Why the stage of the world is called
The Mahasabha is also called the ‘Parliament of the World’, as it is the only body in which all the UN member countries have equal representation. Every country has the right to one vote, no matter how big or small it is. This platform provides an opportunity to the heads of state, government heads and foreign ministers to come together on global issues. The main objective of the General Assembly is to discuss, debate and recommendations on international peace and safety, human rights, development, disarmament and subjects related to international law. It also passes the United Nations budget and selects temporary members of the Security Council.

Special and emergency session
Apart from the regular annual session, the Mahasabha can also call special session and emergency special session. Special sessions are called for intensive discussion on a particular issue. Emergency special sessions are called when the Security Council fails to take action for the maintenance of international peace and security. This allows the General Assembly to take action under the ‘united’ proposal for peace ‘. Therefore, the United Nations General Assembly is a regular and annual program that serves as an important platform for global diplomacy and cooperation.
