Why are people protesting?
Ladakh is home to a high -altitude desert area for some 300,000 people along the border of both China and Pakistan.
The region lost its autonomy in 2019, as it was excluded from the state of Jammu and Kashmir by the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and kept under the direct administration of New Delhi.
Half of Ladakh residents are Muslims, while some 40% are Buddhists.
The protesters are demanding forums for the federal region, the job quota for local residents, and special status for Ladakh will be given special status that will allow the construction of local bodies to protect their tribals.
The demonstrations were called in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk, who are on hunger strike for two weeks.
In a statement posted on social media, Wangchuk said, “Social disturbance arises when you keep the youth unemployed and deprive them of their democratic rights.”
