Netherlands to return ‘Java Man’ fossil in Indonesia – DW – 09/26/2025

The Netherlands on Friday announced that it would give back a collection of thousands of fossils to Indonesia.

The collection is made up of over 28,000 fossils, including some so -called “Java Man” bones. These are the first known fossils of Homo Ectus, the ancestors of the Homo Sepians species.

The soon -to -be recovered fossils are known as Dubois collection after the Dutch anthropologist Eugene Dubois. Dubois extracted fossils from Indonesia in 1891, during the time the country was a Dutch colony.

The “Java man” part of the collection is first considered to include fossils, which was ever left between monkeys and humans. It often receives the name because it was discovered on Indonesian island Java.

“This collection is an important resource in research in human development,” said the Dutch government.

Fossils of spiritual and economic importance for Indonesia ‘

Friday’s announcement Dutch independent colonial collections found that “the circumstances under which fossils were obtained” and came to the conclusion that “it was like that they were removed against people, resulting in injustice work against them.

It was recommended that fossils be returned to Indonesia.

“The fossils were of spiritual and economic importance to the local population,” said the Ministry of Dutch Culture.

This is not the first case related to Indonesia, which had already rectified more than 200 returned items from the Netherlands two years ago.

Indonesia became independent of the Netherlands in August 1945. The Netherlands captured the South East Asian Islands for three centuries and not accepted the independence of the region four years later in 1949, four years later.

Netherlands resonates with colonial collection

This is the sixth time when the Netherlands have returned the goods based on the recommendations of the Dutch independent colonial collection committee.

Dubois collection is the latest example, however, the Netherlands gradually returned the other pieces obtained from pre -colonies.

Earlier this year, for example, the Dutch government returned 113 of the ancient Benin Bronz Collection to Nigeria.
