Indian police arrested activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday after a fatal protest in Ladakh in the week, killing at least four people.
Mobile internet services have been suspended in Leh city. A day after the authorities implemented a curfew in that district of Ladakh and Kargil, it comes a day after a day of banning public functions to groups of five.
New Delhi convicted Wangchuk for protests in the Himalayan region, where people were calling for the state.
Officials have not disclosed the allegations against the worker, but it was reported that Wangchuk was arrested before a press conference to speak on Friday.
A political flashpoint for India
In 2019, the Government of India divided Ladakh from Indian controlled Kashmir.
This was a step that was not welcomed by the residents who have a continuity to be independent of New Delhi with demands for political rights in recent years.
The “Sixth Schedule” of the Constitution of India was a promise to include Ladakh, which would allow people in the disputed region to enact their laws and policies, but it has been made to come in fruits.
Wangchuk went to the hunger striker as he demanded a full platform for Ladakh or for land and their delicate environment – roughly due to climate change – should be constitutional preserved.
