Case files against actor Vijay’s party – DW – 09/28/2025

At least 39 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a campaign rally in southern India.

The tragedy occurred as Vijay, a popular actor, who entered politics in recent years, held a program for his Tamilga Vatri Kajham (TVK) party in Karur city of Tamil Nadu state.

According to local media, there were at least eight children of the killed.

What do we know about the incident?

The crush allegedly broke, while a crowd of at least 30,000 people waited to listen to the star to give a speech.

Indian news outlets said that Vijay was late to speak for hours, causing the crowd to become restless.

There is no report that some mob tried to run the politician’s bus in the city.

Witnesses said that many people lose consciousness in chaos.

Officials said a criminal case has been registered against TVK party leaders.

The Tamil Nadu police filed the case, the first step towards the possible allegations, “TVK party leaders Bous Anand, Nirmal Kumar and VP Mathialgan, and investigations are under investigation,” senior police officer V. Selvaraj said that the Reuters told the news agency.

Vijay, Modi Express shock and sadness

Vijay, known by one name, is one of the most bankable actors of Tamil cinema for three decades.

Starting his party last year, he drew a large crowd during political rallies.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin ordered a commission headed by a retired judge, to investigate the “incident of the tragedy”.

He announced that the families of the victims would receive one million rupees (€ 9.700 or $ 11,200) in compensation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X that the incident was “deeply sad.”

“My views are with families who have lost their loved ones. To give them strength in this difficult time,” he wrote.

Saturday’s seal is only the latest to claim life in India. In January, 30 people died during a crowd to reach a holy river during the Maha Kumbh festival. In July 2024, 121 people were killed during a Hindu religious meeting in Uttar Pradesh.
