The distant option for Germany (AFD) party has failed to take a town hall in three runoff milestones in the most populous state of Northern Rhine-Westphalia in Germany on Sunday.

Center-Left Social Democrats (SPD) candidates defeated their AFD opponents in the cities of Gelsencanne and Duisburg, while Chancellor Frederick Merz’s center-rights Christian Democrats (CDU) won in Hagan.

According to the results of the initial state, however, the AFD raised its share of votes in the councils and the district councils to about 14.5%, which placed it at 22.1%behind the SPD.

Two weeks after the local elections, there were about 150 runoff elections on Sunday, including several mayor competitions and couples for the district administrator offices.

The runoff election became necessary in cases where no candidate got more than 50% in the first round, with a simple majority sufficient to win in the second round.
