‘No sign of life’ revealed – DW – 10/02/2025

In Indonesia, detecting “no indication of life,” on Thursday, the rescue team in Indonesia decided to use heavy machinery to remove the debris of the falling school on Monday.

A part of the school’s multi-storey building in Java collapsed on Monday, while the students gathered for prayer in the afternoon.

Five students were rescued on Wednesday, but about 60 teenage students are still missing, awakening the apprehension that none of them escaped from the accident.

Following tireless rescue operations of three days, five people have been confirmed dead while 59 are still missing.

Students were mostly teenage boys in seven to 12 grades. The female students were praying in another part of the building and managed to escape, the remaining people said.

Caution to move forward with caution

On Thursday, more than 200 rescue were present at the site, any of which were designed for an early ambulance found in the hospital.

Suharinto, head of the country’s disaster mitigation agency, said, “We used high -tech devices such as thermal drones, and scientifically, there were not many signs of life.”

Indonesia’s coordinated Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister, Pratikno, told the media that the family of missing people was still preserved before the decision was taken.

Pratikno said on Thursday that rescue work would proceed with great care, even if more signs of life could not be detected.

“In any case, when using heavy machines, we will be very, very careful,” Pratikno said, which goes only by one name as is common in Indonesia.

Earlier, the rescue team avoided using heavy machinery after collapse, due to unstable debris. The rescue team manually dug to find the remaining people.
