A new game is going to take place in the Indo-Pacific and India will benefit from it somewhere. Because the wait for the American Navy is about to end. After months of delay, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has approved the multi-billion dollar project under which the Navy’s next generation stealth fighter jet will be built. This week the Pentagon will announce the name of the company that will make it. After years, America is again entering this game. This project is the center point of America’s strategy to counter China. It is clear that America is now ready to go to any extent to stop China.

The F/A-XX will replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fleet that has been in operation since the 1990s. This jet will enter service in the 2030s, while the Super Hornet will last until the 2040s. The Pentagon and the Navy did not respond to comments, but the program is raising questions about the future of naval aviation. If there are delays or reduced funding, the Navy may be left without a carrier-based modern fighter in the 2030s, which could weaken power projection against China.

Why so important?

China’s military modernization with stealth fighters like J-20 and J-35 and advanced anti-ship missiles is challenging the US Navy. Analyst Roman Schweizer told Reuters, China is busy making prototypes of 6th generation aircraft. That’s why America has had to bring next generation navy fighter jets. This will help the Navy project power over long distances, especially in hotspots like the Taiwan Strait or the South China Sea. It is clear that this is going to affect India also.

What could be the features

  • It is being said that this is the 6th generation fighter, which will complement the F-35C. This is a strike fighter. Its identity will be primary surface attack, secondary air superiority. Navy’s focus is on speed and payload. Its features will surprise you.
  • Advanced Stealth: Low radar signature, advanced materials to dodge enemy radar. Broadband and IR stealth technology. Designed to counter China’s J-20/J-35.
  • Improved Range and Endurance: 25% more range than the F-35C (approximately 1,200-1,500 nautical miles), unlimited operations with mid-air refueling. Perfect for long missions in the Pacific.
  • AI Integration: Decision support to the pilot through artificial intelligence, such as sensor fusion. Big Data Communications, Non-GPS Navigation.
  • Drone and System Integration: Teaming with Unmanned Combat Aircraft (CCA). Link-up with Navy’s carrier-based air defense systems. Off-board data usage from NIFC-CA network.
  • Design: Tailless, blended wing body, twin-engine. Manned and unmanned versions. There may be canards, but software to manage stealth.
  • Supersonic speed, high manoeuvrability, advanced weapons (high-performance missiles). Electromagnetic Spectrum Domination.

What is the benefit to India

Boeing’s concept is tailless twin-engine. But the focus of American company Northrop is on making stealth jets like B-2/B-21. Whichever company gets this deal will have to complete it soon. Because its design has not even been discussed yet. Budget is the biggest concern. Because the American government has already cut its budget significantly. This is interesting for India. With America in QUAD, such a fighter jet will balance the Indo-Pacific.
