Israeli government approves framework for release of hostages held by Hamas
The Israeli government has approved the outline of an agreement to release all hostages held by the Hamas terrorist group in Gaza.
“The government has just approved the framework for the release of all hostages – living and dead,” Netanyahu’s office posted on the social media platform X.
The deal was partially brokered by the United States and included the release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
Agreed line in Gaza.
The Israeli government’s approval comes after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed on “phase one” of their Gaza plan. The release of the hostages and a ceasefire are part of “phase one” of the plan, with later phases focusing on post-Hamas governance of Gaza.
How many hostages are still held in Gaza?
According to the Israeli government, 48 Israeli hostages are still being held by Hamas in Gaza. Only 20 are believed to survive.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led terrorist attacks in Israel killed nearly 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
This led to the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed and about 170,000 wounded in Gaza since the war began.
Although the ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants killed, it says about half of those killed were women and children.
