Germany has set aside millions of euros for Gaza reconstruction
Germany is preparing to pledge at least €100 million ($116 million) to help rebuild Gaza, German Development Minister Reem Albli-Radovan said on Sunday. The exact amount has not yet been determined, with Albali-Radovan saying only that the figure will be in the three-digit millions.
Albali-Radovan told Germany’s public broadcaster ARD that some aid to Gaza, which was halted after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, is now available again.
Much of Gaza, including hospitals and schools, has been destroyed during nearly two years of fighting between Israel and Hamas. The United Nations development agency, UNDP, has said that Israel’s bombing of Gaza has caused the worst destruction of housing in the region since World War II.
Germany has been a strong supporter of Israel during its military campaign in Gaza, according to the German Economics Ministry, which has authorized arms exports worth almost half a billion euros between October 7, 2023 and May 13, 2025.
Albali-Radovan emphasizes that the total cost of rebuilding Gaza will be very high and that Germany cannot foot the bill alone. “We must achieve this together as part of the international community,” he said.
Along with Egypt, Germany plans to invite participants to a reconstruction conference and this “will happen in the coming weeks”, the minister said, adding that he expected further details in the coming days.
